I originally painted this as a Sleeping Beauty fairytale painting. On the day that Donald Trump was elected President of the US, I was jolted out of fairyland and forced into reality. My reaction was to bloody and disfigure my fairy princess. At the time, I was thinking about titling it Blood coming out of her Whatever (Trump's on Megyn Kelly)
Ultimately I named the painting The Shower of Stain, a phrase from Emily Dickinson's poem 465 about autumn. Here are the first two stanzas:
The name - of it - is "Autumn" - The hue - of it - is Blood - An Artery - opon the Hill - A Vein - along the Road -
Great Globules - in the Alleys - And Oh, the Shower of Stain - When Winds - upset the Basin - And spill the Scarlet Rain -
I destroyed a second painting that day with vermilion. The painting, called Bound and Bloody, is about powerlessness and frustration. I've continued to rework this painting and, at this point, I'm not sure where it's going.
