I was listening to Worl-A-Girl, a 1990s hip-hop reggae girl band, bopping around and singing while I painted this piece. Her dress balloons open below the bodice, her body dissolving into whirling blooms as she spins, flowers flying off the fabric into the air around her. I love painting floating figures with a dreamy airiness, untethered from the ground. The flowers on the dress itself are slightly faded, which adds a quiet tension beneath all that movement — a playful surface concealing something more complicated underneath. This piece touches on some of my favorite recurring themes: girlhood, nostalgia, and longing. Like Daedalus Island, it came from instinct rather than plan — this time inspired by what I was listening to as I worked.
